The AI Power Play: Why Data Centers Are Turning to Industrial Boilers and Steam Turbines

The rapid growth of artificial intelligence has created an unprecedented strain on power grids worldwide. As data centers proliferate, they’re consuming vast amounts of electricity, prompting a scramble for solutions that’s led to an unlikely player emerging: industrial boilers and steam turbines.

Data centers are springing up across the globe, driven by over 12,000 active AI projects in the US alone, representing a staggering 1,570 gigawatts of generator capacity. Analysts predict that AI will account for more than half of installed power generation capacity by 2028. Utilities are crying out for help, and data center developers are responding with creative solutions.

Applied Digital, a leading developer and operator of data centers, is at the forefront of this trend. Chairman and CEO Wes Cummins has signed a $2.4 billion design/build agreement with independent power producer Base Electron to bring 1.2 gigawatts of steam turbines fed by gas-fired industrial boilers online in North Dakota. The first facility is set to come online late in 2028, with two more following soon after.

Cummins attributes the shift towards industrial boilers and steam turbines to their sheer scale. “You need a lot of power for an AI data center,” he explains. “The boiler and steam turbine combination is proven – it’s a tried-and-true solution that can deliver the electricity we need.” With lead times on gas turbines stretching out as far as 2032, Cummins can’t afford to wait.

The Industrial Boilers Advantage

Industrial boilers and steam turbines offer a level of flexibility that traditional solutions often can’t match. “Packaged boilers are the preferred option,” says Cummins. “They’re made and assembled in the factory, packaged with burners and controls, and shipped as a complete system.” This speeds up installation times and reduces labor costs, essential for developers who need to get their facilities online quickly.

Industrial boilers also offer a level of scalability that gas turbines can’t match. “If you’re building an AI data center, you need power on tap,” explains Cummins. “Industrial boilers and steam turbines can deliver that – at a lower cost per unit than traditional solutions.”

The Grid Conundrum

Utilities are struggling to keep up with the skyrocketing demands of AI. A recent survey by Black & Veach found that 53% of utilities cited available power as their top obstacle in getting data centers online, followed closely by transmission and substation upgrades.

The grid is not designed for the scale of AI we’re seeing today. “We need solutions that can deliver power quickly and efficiently,” says Cummins bluntly. “Industrial boilers and steam turbines are part of that solution.”

As we look to the future, it’s clear that the energy landscape is undergoing a significant change. The rise of AI has created new demands, new challenges – and new opportunities for innovation.

By embracing industrial boilers and steam turbines, data center developers are showing their willingness to think outside the box when solving the grid conundrum. As Cummins puts it bluntly, “If we don’t get this right, we risk crippling the very infrastructure that’s driving progress.”

    It's great that data centers are exploring alternative power solutions, but let's not get too carried away with the "tried-and-true" boiler and steam turbine combo. We're still talking about a massive gamble: building facilities that will produce electricity for 10+ years before even starting to pay off. Where's the incentive for efficiency or innovation? Cummins might see this as a cost-effective stopgap, but I'd rather see more emphasis on renewable energy integration or decentralized power solutions – at least those would future-proof our grid for the long haul.
