Britain's Citizenship Surge: A Reflection of a Changing Country The surge in applications for British citizenship is not just a response to uncertainty over future immigration policy, but a profound shift in the country's demographics and a growing desire among foreign nationals to put down roots in the UK.
According to analysis by the University of Oxford's Migration Observatory, 315,224 people applied for British citizenship in the year ending June 2026 – an increase of 17% on the previous year.
This marks a new record high, with applications having been steadily rising since 2014. Citizenship applications from EU citizens have surged by 40% over the past year, as of October 2025.
